Door handle lifts but won’t lock
This is a common call-out on patio doors, French doors, back doors and uPVC doors. It is usually internal resistance in the multipoint mechanism, a worn gearbox, or a dropped door stopping the locking points from lining up. Do not keep forcing it — that can turn a manageable repair into a full mechanism replacement.
Patio, French or back door won’t lock
If the key turns but the door will not lock, the cylinder may be fine but the gearbox or multipoint strip is no longer engaging. This can show up as a patio door not locking, French door won’t lock, back door won’t lock, or a key spinning without operating the locking points.
Door stuck shut or jammed
When the mechanism has failed in the locked position, patio doors can jam shut, French doors can get stuck shut, and double glazed doors can refuse to open. I will attempt to gain entry first and then repair the lock fault where possible.

The good news: many uPVC door faults are repair jobs, not new-door jobs
Most customers do not know whether they need a new mechanism, a new cylinder, a service, or just alignment. You might call it a patio door, French door, back door, double glazed door or uPVC door. My job is to work out the fault and recommend the least disruptive fix that will last.
Key turns but the multipoint lock does not engage
This is classic gearbox or centre-case failure. The cylinder may still work perfectly, but the mechanism behind it is no longer driving the hooks and rollers. In many cases the fault can be repaired without replacing the whole door.
Failed strip or full mechanism replacement
When the centre case, strip, or locking points are too worn to save, the correct replacement is measured and fitted. This is where accurate sizing matters. A wrong strip can make the door worse, not better.

If the mechanism has failed in the locked position, the first job is restoring access without damaging the frame or door where possible. Once the door is open, I can show you whether it is a repair, alignment issue or replacement-part job.
Why these faults get worse if left alone
A stiff handle or awkward key rarely fixes itself. Small alignment or wear problems usually become more expensive once the door finally jams or the locking points stop working altogether.
Door dropping on the hinges
Even a millimetre of drop can stop the locking points aligning with the keeps in the frame. The handle gets harder to lift, the key feels stiffer. Left alone, this turns a simple alignment job into a full mechanism replacement.
Wear inside the gearbox or strip
The internal components of a multipoint mechanism wear down over years of use — particularly if the door was ever forced. This is the most common cause of the handle feeling stiff or the key turning without locking.
Forcing the handle makes it worse
If the door is already struggling, forcing the handle to lock it puts extra stress on the gearbox and strip. A £60–£80 repair can become a £150+ full mechanism replacement if the forcing continues. Call earlier rather than later.

Standard, high-security or British Standard TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders supplied and fitted — a strong security upgrade. If you're not sure what you have, describe it when you call and I'll advise before coming out.
Emergency access — door stuck shut
If the mechanism has failed in the locked position and you can't get in or out, I'll attempt non-destructive entry first. In many cases I can restore access without damaging the frame or door. Repair or replacement follows once you're back inside.
